Symposium Objective

Art therapy was founded to further comprehensive health, well-being, and human understanding through artistic expression. Yet as the field grows, it has paradoxically narrowed its mission and often veered away from the art base. This challenge will be addressed by asking how art heals, now and throughout history, and the extent to which artistic processes continue as primary elements of training, research, and professional identity. And as the art therapy field officially defines itself as a psychotherapeutic discipline, we will discuss how this affects the more inclusive therapeutic use of art in healthcare, education, and all sectors of society in need of healing.

Letter From Our President

Dear Creative Friends and Colleagues,

Welcome to our 42nd Annual Buckeye Art Therapy Symposium, September 7-9, 2023. We are honored to have Shaun McNiff  as our Pre-Conference Course and Keynote presenter and are thrilled to be back in person at Ursuline College for the Thursday Pre-Conference and Friday symposium, with Saturday as a virtual day.

The BATA Symposium provides connections with our creative colleagues who share our interests, attitudes, and aspirations. It is a time of renewal, connections, and networking. We explore the latest advances in the identification of pivotal skills that our variety of presenters offer to share. It is our chance to deepen our grasp of the complex craft and profession of art therapy and learn how we can continue to enhance our sense of expertise and fulfillment.

Thank you for joining us at the 42nd Annual BATA Symposium to enrich our profession, each other, and ourselves.

Sincerely,

Janeane Grisez, ATR-BC
