Paper: The Effects of Art on Gut: Multidisciplinary Research Team Design and Findings

A multi-disciplinary team of a gastroenterologist, psychologist and art therapist, and professional students conducted an eight-week study to examine the effects of virtual group art versus art therapy sessions with patients with gastrointestinal symptoms. The purpose of this presentation is to describe (1) effective multidisciplinary work, (2) study findings, and (3) ways to mentor students.
Paper: Implementing Bedside Art Therapy Intervention with Survivors of Gun Violence at a Level I Trauma Center

Marginalized populations experience higher rates of gun violence while simultaneously facing increased barriers to mental health treatment. Inpatient hospitalization presents an opportunity for mental health intervention. This presentation will describe methods and qualitative results of implementing bedside art therapy with survivors of gun violence at a Level I trauma center.

This program will explore clients’ experiences of spiritual wellness on the microsystem, mesosystem and macrosystem level; and address how counselors can aid clients in developing or fostering spiritual wellness.

Papermaking can support survivors of trauma and loss with a meaningful framework to address memories and powerful content through pulping significant items associated with the experience, make meaning through the production process, and then activate new artworks and beginnings with the formed paper. This moderated panel highlights art therapists’ implementation of hand papermaking for trauma, grief, and loss through sharing their reflections and experiences, as well as methods and applications important to the therapeutic process. Content will include discussion of therapeutic benefits, theory and practice, materials, case examples, and Q &A.
