Bullying, suicide, and school Violence
affects students from elementary to high
school. The age of students who have suicide
ideation or suicide completions continues to
get younger and younger. This workshop will take a
practical approach for addressing a variety of crisis situations in a school setting. The workshop will begin with participants learning a general model of crisis intervention that utilizes empathy strategies for supporting crisis communication. Participants will practice this six-step model for crisis intervention for the counseling setting using participant contributed
scenarios.
Participants will also learn de-escalation strategies that can be used by counselors or teachers for in-the-moment crisis situations. This will be grounded in the developmental model of crisis and participants will have
an opportunity to experience the verbal escalation continuum and practice de-escalation techniques.
Bullying will be discussed in terms of the negative impact to the victim and how to use a five-factor screening tool developed by Dr. Losey to screen risk for children experiencing persistent bullying. A screening
process will be proposed and practiced based on an actual case study.
The participant will learn factors that contribute to suicide ideation and the primary information needed to make a determination of suicide lethality.Participants will practice a suicide assessment using an actual case
study.
