Ethics, the Internet and Social Media: Challenges and Opportunities for Mental Health Professionals

  • 16 Nov 2012
  • 9:00 AM - 12:15 PM
  • Cleveland State University, Section 470 Julka Hall
Younger clients and community-based clients are seeking online contact with mental health care providers at an increasing rate. Online media offer the promise of increased efficiency and effectiveness of therapeutic services, supervision of trainees, and peer consultations. However, they also present risks to both client and professional. In addition to the practical concerns about the security of the technology and the problems with misunderstanding of any text-based communications, there are uncertainties about the effectiveness of these innovative interventions (especially when used in the absence of factto-
face contact). The diligence with which mental health professionals protect client confidentiality and conduct appropriate informed consent is also an area of concern.
This workshop explores the ethical and legal responsibilities of mental health professionals in use of technology for treatment, follow-up, peer consultation, and supervision experiences. Current standards, guidelines, and regulations will be analyzed
and applied to vignettes drawn from practice, along with discussion and response to questions by Dr. Welfel.
