DESCRIPTION:

Some of the most fulfilling moments of life are when we make secure emotional connections with other people. When we try but fail to make those connections, it can be devastatingundefinedespecially with those who are close to us. Emotions are meant to signal to others what we are feeling and prompt a fitting response that makes connection possible. But what if someone has gotten those wires crossed and doesn’t know how to recognize or respond? This is commonly the core problem in marital and family conflict. In this seminar, we will review current research on the brain and emotional processes, explore the landscape of emotion and interpersonal relations, and introduce tools for untangling the crossed wires in emotional interaction.

CEU OBJECTIVES:

Become aware of current research in brain functioning and emotions. (Including Daniel Coleman on Social Intelligence, Paul Ekman on Emotions and facial expressions, Daniel Siegel: Interpersonal Neuro-Biology, and Leslie Greenberg & Susan Johnson: Emotionally Focused Therapy).

Be able to describe the four parts of an emotion, distinguish between feelings & moods, and name the six universally recognized emotions.

Recognize the role of emotions in fostering effective interpersonal interaction (contingent communication, eliciting responses, and mutual validation).

Be able to explain how Insight and Empathy are essential capacities for interpersonal relationships.

Understand the value of the Meta-Emotions Interview (Gottmann) in assessing couple interactional style.

Practice using the Meta-Emotions Interview Protocol with another person to clarify the way emotions function for them in a key relationship.
